Golf and Tennis Classics in Deerfield
Deer Creek Country Club
From 1980 to 1985 the Deer Creek Country Club hosted the Whirlpool Mazda Classics for the LPGA. In those same years, The Racquet Club at Deer Creek was home to the Maybelline Tennis Classic. Superwoman Lynda Carter was the face of the tournament. Tennis legend Chris Evert won the first four years; Martina Navratilova the next two.
The city’s prestigious golf club community, Deer Creek, is 2,000 single-family homes, townhouses, villas and condominiums built around a championship golf course and many lakes.
Originally it was to be a condominium complex of 8,000 units but in the late ‘70s, American Fletcher National Bank took control of the 688 acres, redesigned them and developed the current lifestyle..
The golf course and clubhouse were built in 1971 by the previous landowner. The clubhouse also operated as the real estate sales office and was notable for a long bar that looked onto the greens and a waterfall.
Sports celebrities that have owned property in Deer Creek are commentator Chris Shenkel and NY Yankee Tommy John.
In the late ‘80s, American Fletcher sold the last of its acreage to what is now The Preserve, a rental community, and The Forum, an assisted living complex.
