About Us
Our Mission
The Deerfield Beach Historical Society inspires public awareness and appreciation of the diverse people, places, and events that contribute to Deerfield Beach’s evolving history.
Philosophically, as the city’s principal agency for historic preservation, we bring history to our community through a wide variety of programs, exhibitions, publications, special events, and outreach services, in the belief that an understanding of history can provide connections to the past, a sense of belonging in the present, and responsibility for the future.
Our History
The Deerfield Beach Historical Society was founded in 1973, with a directive to identify, preserve and maintain historical sites in the Deerfield Beach area. The first order was to preserve the Pioneer House (Kester Cottage), a 1930’s era cottage. The Society came together in 1976 to prevent demolition of the old two-room school house, which also served as the town’s city hall for many years.
In 1977 the home of James D. and Alice Butler, early Deerfield pioneers, was bequeathed to the Society and became our permanent home.
