The Erosion of Deerfield Beach
Groins Are the Solution
From the 1940’s to the early 1960’s, tremendous damage was done to beach in Deerfield Beach primarily by storms coming in from the Northeast. Our city became recognized as one of the most seriously eroded beaches on the Atlantic Coastline.
Early attempts to prevent beach loss failed. Thanks to the work of City Engineer Art Strock along with Dr. Per Braun a plan to construct a series of concrete groins with large rocks permanently attached was developed. In 1962, with the support our Ed Dietrich Senior, Odas Tanner and other City leaders the groins were installed.
